As I sit upstairs

I realize I'm drunk
on more than beer and wine.
The doorbell rings, they call my name.
and I ring in the nerve
to throw those poems away

I like

The way the winter trees
shake with the wind
like so many wood blocks

and the look of vines
stretched like veins over brick
remind me I like things alive,
the way they infest the moments
and the rush of all that is

and when eyes meet
I like the sound,
the unreplicated harmony,
of speechlessness

Iceicles

Yesterday I shattered you
and you became diamonds,
for a few minutes at least
but now you're back,
and it's nice to see, finally
a little resiliency
so live it up buddy,
your time is short

Rip Tide

Sometimes when the waves crash

they decide not to fight,

like the two bright eyed kids

punching and kicking the water.

So they just fall like two dominoes.

They roll and slide

through the seaweed and sand

holding their breath and watching the surface

curl over their heads,

like clouds rushing in and out.

Wrapped in that wet blanket

they gaze at the bright sky,

they watch the sun dance

they slide and sway

With the shifting tides,

an exercise in helplessness
